Dear Cookie,

I suspect your human is just out of shape. Try cutting back on his food and increasing his exercise and see if he improves. It is possible that you may have a very smart human. He may be playing "tail gunner," trying to nab circling game by surprise. If he is "intact" you could consider letting him have offspring. Only choose the best females for him.

Boomer

So far my human appears to enjoy me rolling in the road kill and then sitting in his lap & licking his face; however, I may have to get my human a shock collar with longer range or stronger setting as he still tends to lag behind when I am hunting.

Dear Cookie,

A shock collar for your human would probably work. Before you try a shock collar, try rewarding him with a nice treat such as a road killed partially putrefied piece of snake. How you reward your human is as important as what you reward him with. When rewarding with dead things be sure to roll on them first, then get right in your humans lap before giving him his treat. Here is an insider tip. Nothing beats a warm treat for a human. Yakking up a couple of partially digested meadow voles on your human will certainly make your human keep up with you!

Hi Graham,

I remember you. I spent a few minutes each day with my master to learn how to "sit, stay, heel, and come". My master went to an American Kennel Club approved dog obedience class to learn how to work with dogs. My master also learned how to teach me from books he read.

Dear Boomer,

I met you at the Pheasant Fest and you showed me all of the amazing things you learned. How did you learn to do them? How long did it take you?

Deer Boomer,

I am a Beagle and have a problem with my human hunter. Every time we go rabbit hunting, my human fails to stay up with me and my pal RC. If we don’t find rabbits in places he selects, he lags behind when we look in places we know are better for finding rabbits.

Last time we were out, he got even farther away from us than usual … We thought we were never going to find him. RC and I even split up to make finding him more likely. RC found him 2 days later, then after 3 days, I found him. To top it all off, my human acted angry toward me when it was ENTIRELY his fault.

What is wrong with my human? How can I train him to stay up with us? Do you think placing a shock collar on my human would help?

If things don’t improve soon, I may trade him for another human.

On The trail Of A Solution,

Cookie

Dear Bill,
I'm going to post a story that will shed some light on your questions.
Just as a dog's sense of smell is different than human's, so is our taste. I sent out a query via p-mail and received a variety of answers. Briefly, it depends on what a dog is used to. Some bird dogs get a quail head when their human performs his job correctly and bags a bird. Other dogs get a pat on the head or a hug for a job well done.
I, Boomer, prefer a peeled hard boiled egg, coarsely minced, served in a bowl that is labeled "Top Dog".

Hello Boomer, My human companion and I used to play around on the very same ground you live on so I know how abundant the wild life is. I'm old and frail now but in my youth I would take my human companion on (he called them hikes, I called it hunting).

I have two questions if you please.

1. Does it frustrate you that humans (I'm sure yours as well, can't seem to smell the rabbit droppings at their feet, let alone smell the rabbit a mere fifty feet away? It's like humans are "blind" with their sense of smell.

2. My human companion didn't hunt. (I don't think he could have smelled a dump 200 feet upwind!) But he allowed me to hunt, (like I'm going to stay at his side in the woods?) but He would let me eat whatever I caught. I am a fan of your blog so I would really like to know if when you hunt, do you ever get part of what you pointed out to your non-smelling human? If you do not does that bother you?

(When you reply to this please address it to my human companion, I'm not supposed to be on the computer.) Thanks!
